Something for Nothing

Work Hard

I don’t know about you but I’m getting awful tired of the entitlement mentality. As a culture we have become so programmed and trained to run to the call of FREE.   We have become so programmed for wanting faster, cheaper and more, that quality and service have often become secondary.
This has also spilled over into our work ethic.  Please understand, I am generalizing here. As an employer, we see far too many, who work for a few days or weeks and then tell us, the job is not what they thought it was.  They don’t want to work this hard.  In days gone by, men took pride in being a hard worker and giving an honest days work for a fair wage.  We don’t see this as much today.  Too often our youth are looking for “an easy job” that doesn’t require too much.
Could it be that this Something for Nothing attitude and behavior is by design?  Let me share with you an analogy:

“Do you know how to catch wild pigs?”

“You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming.

“When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side.

“The pigs, which are used to the free corn, begin to come through the gate to eat the free corn.

“You then slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd. Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught.

“Soon they go back to eating the free corn . They are so used to it that they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity.”

This is exactly what many of us see happening in America . The government keeps pushing us toward Socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as Social Security, tax credit for unearned income, sugar and other farm subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, Medicare, etc. while we continually lose our freedoms, just a little at a time.  In advertising, the Something for Nothing philosophy is echoed in mantras such as you “you deserve a break today” and “you owe it to yourself” reinforce too often that we are entitled to benefits we may not have fully earned.

We should not be opposed to a good deal and working toward cost effectiveness and savings.  However, the “Something for Nothing” attitude has strings attached and the old saying that “There is no such thing as a free lunch” is still true.

Detox with these fun smoothie recipes

Smoothies
Spring time is upon us, and now is the time to get rid of excess body weight by doing a “spring cleaning” of sorts for your body. The perfect way to achieve this is to take a smoothie day once a week.

These smoothies will help your body get rid of built up toxins, improve sluggish digestion and elimination and jump start weight loss goals. They help flatten the belly, clear the skin and increase energy levels.

Smoothies require very little energy to digest and assimilate into energy. This is because the ingredients, which are whole fruits, are already pureed into easily broken down nutrients. They are also very filling due to the high fiber content and wholesome nature of the ingredients.

If you need to, you can eat a very light dinner on your smoothie day. However, it works best if you drink a smoothie for each meal the entire day. If you’d like to add more nutritional value or fiber, you can also add a green powder, wheat grass or ground flaxseed to the recipes below.

Mango Pineapple Smoothie Recipe

  • 1 cup chopped fresh pineapple
  • 1 cup sliced fresh mango
  • 1/2 fresh orange, sliced with seeds removed
  • 1/2 banana, sliced
  • 3/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 T. coconut oil
  • 2 T. of whey powder or soy protein powder
  • 1 t. stevia optional if additional sweetness desired
  • 1 cup ice

Blend all of the ingredients together in a blender. Put the ice in last to avoid getting the ingredients stuck in one place. This recipe supplies fiber, beneficial enzymes from the pineapple and mango, protein from the banana and protein powder and a host of antioxidants.

Vibrant Berry Smoothie Recipe

  • 1 cup chopped strawberries
  • 1 cup blackberries
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 fresh orange, sliced with seeds removed
  • 1/2 sliced banana
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 T. coconut oil
  • 2 T. whey powder or soy protein powder
  • 1 t. stevia (optional)
  • 1 cup ice

Add all ingredients to your blender and blend. This recipe is full of antioxidants. Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries all contain anti-inflammatory properties as well which makes this an excellent recipe for those who suffer fromchronic pain.

The yogurt in both recipes adds beneficial probiotic active cultures. These help to speed sluggish elimination, reduce bloating and water retention and assist in managing weight.

Coconut oil contains beneficial fatty acids which help keep you fuller longer and add vibrance and clarity to your skin. Vitamin C is also excellent for the skin and immune system, and this is supplied in abundance in the fruits contained in both of these smoothie recipes.

After an all-smoothie day you will feel lighter, more energetic and less bloated. It is a great way to detoxify the body and give it a break from the normal foods we eat every day.

Thai Cooking Tips : Use Fresh Ingredients !

Fresh Foods

Most homemade food that tastes really special is made from scratch using fresh ingredients – and great Thai food is no exception.
Many Thais still today do not own a fridge so will buy fresh produce on a daily basis at one of Thailand’s many famous food markets.

In the West, not everyone has an Asian shop on their doorstep but simply making the journey to your nearest supplier twice a year will keep you in fresh Thai flavours.

Be sure to ask what day their fresh ingredients arrive from Thailand (it’s the same day every week), take your bounty home, give the ingredients a good rinse, let them air-dry for a bit, and freeze them the same day in an air-tight container. Not everything can be frozen with good results, but 90% of basic Thai ingredients can – just check with the shop.

Ready? Set! 5 Exercises For Spring

Happy People

Understanding how your body responds to exercise is like how it feels when you press on the gas pedal in your car and you get up to 55 mph in a heart beat. Spring is here and it is time for a tune-up by making sure you body is ready for a great workout that yields results.

Here are 5 must-do exercises that really drive your body to increase metabolic rate and reduce body fat:

  1. Step-Ups – use a step or platform that is about 4-6 inches high. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and jump onto the step or platform at least 15 times. Repeat after walking around the platform in a complete circle.
  2. Squats – stand with your feet hip-width apart and place your arms to your side. Pretend there is a chair behind you and almost sit bringing your arms out in front keeping your back flat and abdominal muscles pulled in.
  3. Push-ups – begin on your knees or feet and place your hands shoulder-width apart on the step or platform. Inhale as you lower your body to the step and exhale as you push yourself up. Repeat for 15 repetitions.
  4. Tricep Dips – sit with your back to the step and place your hands behind you on the step. Lift and lower your body using your tricep muscles to do the work keeping your elbows in line with your wrists. Repeat 12 times.
  5. Lunges – stand with one foot on the step and place your other foot behind you so that your front knee is over your heel. Lower your body keeping your shoulders in line with your hips at least 12 times for each leg. Repeat on the other leg.

The key to getting results with this quick workout is doing all the moves back to back without any rest. It will spike your metabolism, burn fat and help you to continue to burn calories even hours after your workout. Aim for doing this workout at least twice a week. On the other days, go for a walk, take a yoga class or chase your dog around the yard. Light activity is a great way to incorporate some sort of exercise every single day.

Support your body nutritionally after your workout by getting some good quality protein in either in a smoothie with protein, organic berries and cold water or perhaps a mixed green salad with chicken or fish. It is important to avoid low blood sugar levels, especially after a hard workout so plan a healthy meal post workout.

The Worst Weight Loss Traps To Avoid

Weight Loss

Losing weight is not always about one’s desire to look better. Obesity is a serious issue that can have life threatening effects on one’s health. Combating this problem via proper weight loss can prevent serious back and joint problems, diabetes, or your chances of having a stroke. Here are some simple facts and tips that can assist you.

For someone who is looking for an alternative way to lose weight that they have probably not used before steam can be a good choice. A stay in a sauna or steam bath can cause one to lose water weight that could accumulate. Also it will have the added benefit of cleaning out ones pores.

Believe it or not, many restaurants do not list all available food preparation options on the printed menu. Most of the time, chefs and cooks are willing to oblige reasonable requests from diners who prefer to have their food pan-seared or broiled rather than fried, or cooked using healthier alternatives like sunflower or olive oils instead of lard or other animal fats.

A good way to lose weight is to get rid of all the junk food in your house. We tend to eat junk food if it’s around and if it’s not there, we’re less likely to eat it. Get rid of the junk food to make room for healthy food.

You can benefit from cutting most of the sugar out of your diet.

Losing weight in a lasting way is about more than cutting calories or following the latest fads. You need to adopt the approach that’s right for you, and to understand how your own body responds to the various foods you eat. Once you have a good understanding of the principles of how your own body handles food, you will find yourself much more successful at meeting your weight loss goals.
